What type of Human hair to use for tree braids

What type of Human hair to use for tree braids?

This by far is the number one question that I am asked.  Well before you decide on the type of hair to purchase you need to know how much and how long.

1. For maximum fullness and length I recommend you use 24 inch hair for your tree braids, however the hair used should never be shorter then 18 inches. Some braiders will tell you that you have to use 24 inches, but if they know what they are doing they can make it work with 18.  You may be asking why you need such long hair.  When completing tree braids the hair is folded in half so 24 inches ends up being more like 12 and18 inches ends up being closer to 9 inches when your head is completed.

2. You need to get either 2 packs of hair or 8oz.  If you purchase it online they will usually sale it in sets of 4 oz bundles so you will need to get two.

3. Make sure that your hair is not on a weft.  You want to get hair that is meant for braiding so it should be loose. Note that you will not be able to reuse the hair after you take out your tree braids so I would not advise you to purchase the most expensive hair that you can find because you can only use it once.

4. If you are an online shopper like I am then I would suggest that you go to http://www.hisandher.com click on braiding hair on the left hand panel.  I like to tell my clients to get either European wave or French Refined hair.

5. If you want to go to your local beauty supply store then I suggest that you purchase either Milky Way hair our Outre hair.  They are going to give you the most bang for your buck.

I hope this tip was a good one.  I look forward to reading more testimonials from all my clients who purchase my DVDs and successfully learn to tree braid just like me!

  3. I am 20, and I have been braiding hair since I was 11 year old. I have not yet mastered the tree braid. My questions include; How do I make sure that I evenly distribute the hair through the cornroll so I will have a full head instead of it being thin in the back? How do I close the end of my tree braid? And, Silky hair is hard for me to grip, how can I still braid with such silky hair?

If you would like to use human hair for your tree braids and you what to purchase the hair from your local beauty supply store then I suggest that you buy Milky Way hair or Sensational hair. If you want to use Synthetic hair I think that Free Tress hair works great! If you are like me and like to buy your human hair online then I would encourage you to go to http://www.hisandher.com for your human hair.

hey kristen. ive been doing a lot of research on tree braids and i have to say u r pretty darn good @ them. i plan on getting some done sometime this week but i just had a few questions.
    1. Can you wash your natural hair w/ the braids in? (i bet uve gotten that question a million times, but i couldnt find the answer)
    2. Do u know of any brand of hair that is curly when wet but can be flat ironed straight?
    3. Do u recommend anyone in the sacramento, ca area that can do cornrow tree braids really good @ a reasonable price?

oh, and by the way im 13 so if theres a kids discount be sure to tell me that price. (unless the age limit is 10 or something, i might be able to get away w/ being 12 yrs old)

    Hey Ms. Kristen,
Very interested in tree braids but never had them before so I’ve got a couple of questions.
    1. I have natural afro hair and in the past when I’ve had cornrows done they’ll be frizzy in about a week even when wrapped up at night, will this be a problem with tree braids?
    2. What brand do you recommend for good long lasting, inexpensive wet n wavy hair? About how much should you spend since it can’t be reused?
    3. How long SHOULD tree braids last?
    4. When you wash ur hair, do you have to sit under the dryer for an hour or more so ur hair can dry like with a sown-in weave?

  15. kristen says:

    1. One of the great things about the tree braids is that you do not see the cornrow! So the cornrow will eventually get frizzy like cornrows always do but no one will have to know that they are! So if that is one of your worries I would put that your of you mind.
    2. I like to tell my clients that they can use Brandy Pro 10 hair as a replacement for human hair because it is cheaper, it can have heat added to it without damage, when washed it comes back to life and looks just like it did the day you bought it. And did I say it was cheaper? If you are opposed to synthetic hair then I would suggest that you go to http://www.hisandher.com to pick up some hair. It is relatively inexpensive and will last you a long while.
    3. Tree braids should last about 8 weeks.
    4. I do think that it is a good idea to sit under the dryer but it is not necessary. If you would like to wash it I suggest to that you wash it during the day so that the sun can assist you in the drying process. More air is able yo get to the scalp with tree braids then with a sew in weave so I think that you will be able to get around having to sit under the dryer.

It is challenging to explain with words… but you can purchase my Tree Bbraids 101 DVD and you will be braiding tomorrow!

  17. lanette says:

    How much is your dvd?

Is there a picture reference somewhere on how the back should look w/ the tree braids? I saw where you mentioned to someone to make sure a certain technique was done in the back for a high ponytail, but I want to make sure when I look in the mirror, it looks like it is suppose to look. So a picture reference would help.

Also, why are front ponytails not an optimal style with tree braids?

    Thanks!

  18. kristen says:

    $19 during the sale.
