I have a new section on the website that deals with hair care advice. The following is a sample of the types of articles you can find on that section, called Urban Hair Care Guide. I hope these articles are beneficial to you.
People have different types of hair. Many people with frizzy or very curly hair prefer to have their hair straightened. In order to permanently straighten the hair, stylists use chemical relaxers.
Common relaxers used for African American hair are lye relaxers.
Lye relaxers are made up of harsh chemicals that change the structure of one’s hair. The inner layer of the hair is the cortex, this is what gives the hair its curl, and it is also what gives the hair its strength and elasticity. What the chemicals do is break through the cortex of the hair shaft to release the curl. Thus, when you use such chemicals to make curly hair straight, you’re not only loosing the curl but you’re also losing its strength and elasticity.
The bad thing about using lye relaxers is that once you’ve applied them to your hair, there’s no turning back. There’s no way to reverse the process. The process of straightening your hair makes it weaker and vulnerable to hair breakage. As a result, lye relaxers actually strip your hair of its strength. It’s not truly helping your hair, but is damaging it.
As much as possible, it is recommended to avoid lye relaxers to straighten one’s hair. However, if you have decided to use them, make sure that you have it done by a hair care professional. The right amount of lye relaxers is crucial. Therefore, professional stylist will know exactly how much to use, there is less chance of hazard this way. These types of chemicals must not be misused or overused. Not only that, you need to make sure that your hair and scalp are prepared for such a chemical process. Ensure that you have a healthy scalp to withstand such chemicals. It should not be done if you already have damaged hair or if you have had scalp damage. Of course, it should never be done on very young children.
