So maybe I am showing my age but one of my favorite childhood stars from back in the day was Brandy Norwood. I think that was when I first fell in love with hair. All I ever wanted was the “Brandy Braids” In my opinion she revolutionized the way women viewed braids! Now she has taken on her own hair line, and a new reality show A Family Business. All I can say is, “You go girl”

Should I Wash My Natural Hair While It Is Braided

It is nice to know that people of all ages can appreciate my work. It is our youth that give me the motivation to keep on blogging! With all that said here is a question that one of my readers posted:

Hey Kristen. I’ve been doing a lot of research on tree braids and I have to say u r pretty darn good @ them. I plan on getting some done sometime this week but I just had a few questions.
1. Can you wash your natural hair w/ the braids in? (I bet you have gotten that question a million times, but i couldn’t find the answer)
2. Do u know of any brand of hair that is curly when wet but can be flat ironed straight?
3. Do u recommend anyone in the Sacramento, ca area that can do cornrow tree braids really good @ a reasonable price?

oh, and by the way im 13 so if theres a kids discount be sure to tell me that price. (unless the age limit is 10 or something, i might be able to get away w/ being 12 yrs old)

To answer question number 1….. YES please wash your hair while it is braided! It is so important to keep your natural and braid hair clean. I get so irritated when people get their hair braided and their hair care gores on auto pilot. I use this analogy to get my point across. “Would you not wash your face for 4 weeks just because you had on a mask?” No you wouldn’t because your face would break out and you would be walking around looking CRAZY. Well your scalp is skin just like your face and it needs care too. There is no need to wash it everyday however 4 weeks is too long! So please wash your hair at least 2 times a week. And washing does not mean that tyoui have to get in the shower and do it but at least get some sea breeze and clean your scalp.

Question number 2…. Yes there is a l0t of hair that can be curly and straight. Any of the wet and wavy hair can do this. For example Milky way hair. Hair purchased from www.hisandher.com There is even synthetic hair that can do this. One of my personal favorites is Brandy’s Pro 10 hair. It has this versatility. In fact I wish she made lace front wigs because I think that they would sell well. Using a Flat Iron like the FHI Ceramic Flat Iron can work well too.

Question 3…. I am not familiar with the Sacramento braiders but if you are a braider in Sacramento please send me a comment and I can post some of your work and possibly get you some clients. I love sharing the wealth with other braiders!

Lastly. Is there a children’s discount? Of course children tend to have smaller heads therefore their heads are easy to do do and take less time. When this happens I do share the wealth by coming down on my prices.

To Weave or Not to Weave

Remember the days when people would talk about you when you had in a weave? You were said yot have in horse hair, or that you were “unbeweavible” Did people say this because they were afraid of change or perhaps they were jealous that they were not able to have their hair weaved. My personal belief was the the weave was so bad that there was only one thing to do……talk about crazy it looked! One of my favorite things to do it learn new techniques and become astonished by what some people allow to be done to their hair.

Weaves should be believable let that be your first priority. Even if you go fron 2 inches to 24 inches make it look real please. here are some examples of what not to do…

Review: Misikko.com’s FHI Ceramic Flat iron

They say that ignorance is bliss. After many happy (and dare I say, naive) years with an electric flat iron that I purchased a couple of years ago, it was time to replace it due to the fact it had ran its course. Recently I have spent some significant time in the South, after living in Southern California all my life, and I was introduced to “Mr. Southern Humidity” . What does that mean for all of you who have never been able to feel this thick moisture on a hot summer day?It means that if you have naturally curly kinky or anything but straight hair it can be close to impossible for you to have your hair straight after you walk out of your front door. No disrespect to my natural sisters, but sometimes I like to wear my hair straight, no chemicals of course! I was tired of this humidity making me look like I just picked out my natural/Afro. So with all that said I am sure that you can only imagine why I needed a high performing flat iron.

I wanted something in the range of $100-$200, with a dependable track record and plenty of moisturizing heat. I wanted to make sure that I could use it on my daughter and have it take 30 min or less. Again nothing wrong with wearing your hair natural, but there are a couple of times a year when I style my daughter’s hair different. I wanted a flat iron that would not dry out my hair, I wanted a flat iron that was easily cleaned and didn’t pull out my hair as I was using it. So I did my research, I read reviews for the FHI Heat SE and it hailed as a champion of its class.

I researched the FHI Heat Special Edition because I appreciated its many features:

It was able to reach temperatures between 140° – 450°
It combines distinct Nano technologies (Nano Ti + Nano Tio + Nano Ag) for cleansing and purifying to leave hair healthier, shinier and more vibrant.
The plates were treated with Tourmaline to enhance the condition of the hair
Beveled ceramic plates with 3 baked layers that can flip, twist, straighten and curl (and trust me I have done all of the above with this product!)
It can also be used on wet or dry hair (I am not one for straightening my hair while it is wet.The sizzling reminds me too much of my youth when my mother use to press my hair with a straightening comb that she had sitting on a stoveJ)
Oh and yes ladies and gents it is cute to boot!I mean who wants to use an ugly iron.It makes me look and feel more professional while it gets the job done.

So I went online and meet with the good people of Misikko.com where I was allowed to test out my own FHI Heat Special Edition. I can say with a happy face that I have used it on all types of human hair.I have used it on hair bought from my local beauty supply store store. I have used it on my daughter’s naturally kinky hair and I have used it on my own hair and no matter what trials this flat iron has encountered it has held its own as a true champion and I am excited to say that I am a proud owner of a FHI flat iron and I will be until the end.
