Straightening curly hair may be a burden to some. People with curly hair tend to long for straight hair and vice versa. As for those who wish to straighten their curly locks, there are a number of options to do so. There are the chemicals or relaxers which keep curly hair straight. They penetrate the hair shaft to make curls lose their waviness. These relaxers can be further broken down into lye or no-lye relaxers. So what is the difference? Let’s see the difference between the two below.

The Lye Relaxer is obviously a relaxer that has lye as one of its components. Lye is also known as sodium hydroxide. Lye is known as the strongest type of chemical used in relaxers. For its strong characteristic, it has proven to be the longest lasting and most effective of the two. However, the problem with lye relaxers is that is harsh to our hair. Imagine, this chemical, the sodium hydroxide, is the same chemical that makes up home cleaners such as the drain cleaner. Imagine putting that product to your hair. Wouldn’t you be afraid to apply that to your tresses? Lye relaxers can be measured in terms of pH level. The usual lye relaxers range from 10 to 14 in pH level. The higher the pH level, faster your hair will straighten. However, the higher the pH lever, the harsher it is for your hair. Thus, it may be effective but can due you real damage.

On the other hand, the no- lye relaxers are called guanidine hydroxide. It is among the most common alternatives to lye relaxers, simply because it doesn’t have lye. However, that doesn’t mean that no-lye relaxers don’t have chemicals in them. It doesn’t also mean that it is damage-free. No-lye relaxers are just milder than the lye ones. However less damaging, it is still a must to prepare your hair and scalp prior to treatment. Your hair must be in top condition before you use a no-lye relaxer. You must also know that no-lye relaxers require more special care during application.

Whether you choose to use lye or no-lye relaxer, the important thing is to have it done by a hair care professional. Treat your hair with care just like how you treat yourself!
